Memorial Day Greetings

The good looking young man in the center of this photo is my Uncle John (mother's brother). I never met him because he died serving our country in the second World War when he was 21 years old. He gave his life at Iwo Jima serving in the Marines and, sadly, was killed after the war had officially ended. He left no wife or children behind to remember him, so it seems appropriate that his nieces and nephews do so
-- especially on this day.

Sunday Postcard Art

I dug into the family photo album again for this image. It's of my uncle. I get such a kick out of the look on his face. It seems like people never smiled in old photographs, but he has a particularly unhappy look on his face.
The theme at Sunday Postcard Art this week was "cycle, " so this is my submission for the challenge.

A New Route

I decided to take a new route with the photo album I showed you yesterday. Rather than making it a generic friendship album, I thought I'd personalize it with some photos of me and my siblings growing up.
I just came into these photos recently after my father passed away. You could consider these the lost family photos as I haven't seen them in over thirty years. They are not the best quality pictures, but I'm glad to have them.
That's me on the cover.

I'm in the middle here with my older brother and sister.

This is the most dismal looking picture of me and my brother and sister. Looks like we are refugees from a war torn country. I believe it was taken on the train platform where we lived in Chicago probably on one of our typical gloomy winter days.

My youngest sister made it into this picture. Its one of the few baby pictures we have of her, so it's a treasure.

TGIF

For my contribution to Thank God It's Friday, I've created a page for my heritage album. The picture is of my mother and her two brothers during the depression, early 1930's.
I created the background with stamps from Paper Inspirations, Hampton Arts, Making Memories and PSX.

Arch Challenge

When I saw that the challenge at Gothic Arches this week was "history" I knew exactly what I wanted to create. I made it personal history with this tribute to my Uncle John who was killed during World War II while serving with the Marine Corps in Iwo Jima. He was only 22 and left no wife or children to remember him, so I think it's important his nieces and nephews do.
I visited the Marine Corp Memorial in Washington, D.C. last spring and was so moved by it. This quote was on the side of the memorial -- a tribute to all Marines.
Behind the picture of my uncle I have included a copy of his actual death certificate.
